Rethinking Fundraising
Hello everyone,
I hope to find you all well this January. I hope you are warm where you are; the Midwest has been cold and snowy so far.
It is a good time for reflection and thought. As I do that, I am reminded of the impact leaders like you have on the lives of countless individuals and communities. Your dedication, vision, and resilience drive change and progress. This year brings fresh opportunities to deepen relationships, strengthen partnerships, and amplify the good you do in the world. We can continue to break barriers, inspire action, and create sustainable, meaningful change.
Here’s to a year of connection, growth, and extraordinary impact. In light of that I thought it would be a good time to refresh us all on Philanthropy. I hope you enjoy!
Warmly,
Jamie
"Rethinking Fundraising: Is it a dirty word?"
In our journey through understanding philanthropy, one thing becomes crystal clear: misconceptions abound. From what giving truly entails to the role of fundraising, society often misses the mark. Let's shine a light on fundraising and see it for what it truly is—a catalyst for shared vision and values.
Picture this: Philanthropy is the beating heart, and fundraising? It's the pulse—a vital rhythm that propels us forward, allowing us to channel our passion into action. Whether it's for the love of cats or any other cause close to our hearts, fundraising serves as the medium through which others can join us in making a difference.
Gone are the days of fear, guilt, and coercion. These negative undertones stem from a fundamental misunderstanding—a misguided attempt to convert rather than connect. Imagine trying to turn a cat hater into a feline aficionado—it's a futile endeavor that only serves to alienate. Instead, let's focus on engaging those who already share our passion. After all, who's ever been offended by an invitation to champion a cause they love?
Sadly, the typical donor experience often misses the mark. Many find themselves giving to causes they couldn't care less about, trapped in a transactional loop that leaves them feeling like mere checkbooks. But it doesn't have to be this way.
Shifting from transactional to transformational relationships is the game-changer. It's about recognizing that giving isn't about the organization—it's about the individual. It's about empowering donors to be part of something bigger than themselves, where their interests are valued and their contributions celebrated.
So, why does fundraising sometimes carry a negative connotation? When it lacks understanding, when it preys on guilt or perceived wealth, or when it fails to recognize the individual behind the donation. But it doesn't have to be this way. Fundraising, at its core, is about fostering meaningful relationships and connections, about engaging all three pillars—abilities, giving, and passion.
Think about your own philanthropic journey. Do you feel seen and valued by the organizations you support? Do you have a meaningful relationship with a cause close to your heart? If not, it's time to seek out those who align with your values, to build relationships that are rewarding and impactful. Fundraising doesn’t need to be a dirty word, it can be a celebration of shared engagement and vision.
